What are the driving conditions on a South Australian learner's licence?
The vehicle you learn to drive in must be class "C" (car).
You must wear L-plates clearly visible to the front and to the rear of the vehicle.
You must be accompanied by a fully-licenced driver (not provisional) seated NEXT to you. The accompanying driver must actively teach you and assist your driving, and shares the responsibility of driving.
* You must conform to ZBAC (Zero Blood Alcohol) conditions; i.e. you must not drive with alcohol present in your bloodstream. Your accompanying driver must also conform to the BAC applicable to their class of licence. You are restricted to a maximum of 100km/h. You must obey all speed limits!
What is The "System of Vehicle Control"?
There are various systems of driving a motor vehicle used by the DTAL CBT&A-based logbook system and by many organisations employing professional drivers.
It also forms the basis of the South Australian’s VORT (Vehicle On Road Test).
The System is considered to be the safest and most efficient one available, however it is also coming under fire as being outdated and incomplete.
I agree to some extent, as many instructors teach only the basic steps of the system in a robotic manner.
The System does not, for instance, outline the observational skills (such as scanning) which are vital to defensive driving. It is a "bare bones" skeleton to be built up on, and if used in this way it still has a definite place in modern driving.
Is the driving test hard? Do people fail their test often?
The driving test is not hard, but it is strict!
It's not hard in that, providing you are taught correctly and get the necessary amount of practice, driving to the system demanded by the authorities is not hard at all!
However it is strict in that the authorities require you to drive to a defined system (based on the System of Vehicle Control). But as mentioned above this system is easy to follow - as long as you DO follow it!
What do I need to bring to my driving lessons?
You need to bring your current learner's permit. You may also bring a temporary permit which is issued by Transport SA (Section 80), or an international drivers licence. If your permit does not have a photo, you will need to bring other photo identification (ie student ID, passport etc).
How old do I have to be to do my driving test?
You must be 16 years and 6 months before you can sit for your test
Can you give me lessons to prepare for the driving test as opposed to the log book method?
1st time driving school is fully qualified to train students for the Vehicle On Road Test.
Do you provide lessons for people who have/or have had their licence?
1st time driving is happy to offer driver retraining classes. Whether it be for senior citizens who have had their licence revoked and wish to reapply; or for existing drivers who want a refresher lesson to brush up on their skills.
